Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content. Develop the topic thoroughly by selecting the most significant and relevant facts, extend definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples appropriate to the audience’s knowledge of the topic.
Focus: Write a paragraph using facts, quotations, or concrete details that further develops your topic.
Supplies: To get: None—a projector could be used for the handout, but is optional Provided: “The Art of Kissing” practice sheet
Directions to Teacher: Give students a copy of “The Art of Kissing” practice sheet. Tell students that they are going to write a paragraph “backing up” their topic/thesis statement/introductory paragraph. (If you think your students need a fully developed introductory paragraph/ thesis statement, you may want to create one yourself). Briefly discuss the importance of developing a topic using facts, quotations, or concrete details.
