(a) Define the term MACHINABILITY. (4 Marks)

(b) The following data was obtained from a cutting test:

(c) Explain what is meant by the term “Tool life”. (4 Marks)

(d) In the context of centerless grinding what is lobing and what can be done to prevent its occurrence? (8 Marks)

Q2. (a) Calculate for a 36T gear of 5mm module and 20 degree pressure angle:- (i) Plug size (ii) Distance over plugs places in opposite spaces (iii) Distance over plugs spaced 10 teeth apart. (12 Marks)

(b) List 5 measurement techniques used to determine whether or not individual gear tooth elements are manufactured to specified tolerances and describe ONE method in detail. (8 Marks)

(c) Describe in detail the process of gear hobbing. (6 Marks)

(d) What is the advantage of the constant chord method over the Pitch line method of gear tooth thickness measurement? (6 Marks)
