The Rosetta Stone English Pre-test is a tool designed to evaluate learners’ English language needs and proficiency for

the purpose of placing them into the appropriate Rosetta Stone English training solution. The tool has two parts: a

questionnaire and a proficiency test that measures ability from levels A1 (Beginner) to C1+ (Advanced), according to the

Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) (Council of Europe, 2001).

Questionnaire

The questions in this section elicit information about a learner’s prior English study, language background, and learning

goals. Responses to the questionnaire are combined with the proficiency test score to place learners directly into the

appropriate language training solution, as shown in Table 3 (Scoring section) below.

Language Test

The English test has three stages: Stages 1 and 2 are linear and Stage 3 is branched with intermediate and advanced

modules. Learners at lower levels of proficiency may exit the test at the end of Stage 1 or Stage 2. Learners at higher

levels of proficiency will exit the test at the end of Stage 3.

The test can be completed in 30-45 minutes, depending on a learner’s level of English proficiency. The number of

questions that must be completed will vary by learner. The test should be completed in one sitting and learners should

use headphones to ensure that the audio can be heard clearly. Any questions that are not answered will be marked as

incorrect.

Content and Format

In Stage 1, learners answer vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension questions. In Stages 2 and 3, in addition

to vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension items, learners are presented with listening comprehension

questions. A summary of the item types is provided in Table 1. All questions are multiple-choice with four options and

only one correct answer.

Table 1. Item Types

Item Type Description

Vocabulary &

Grammar

Learners read a sentence with one gap and select one of four text answer options to complete the sentence.

Reading

Learners read a sentence and respond or they read a short passage and answer three comprehension questions. All questions include four text answer options.

Listening

Learners listen to a question or statement and choose the correct response from audio or text answer options; listen to a short conversation and answer a question about it; or listen to a longer conversation or monologue and answer three associated comprehension questions.

Scoring

The test is scored automatically. Upon completion, the learner is provided a score page with the test results. Reported

results include the learner’s CEFR level and total scaled score on a scale from 40-400 as shown in Table 2 below.
