What is Computer Network and its Terminologies
A computer network is a grouping of devices that are linked together. Devices can be a node can or a
computer, printer, or any other device capable of sending or receiving data and Communication
channels are the links that connect the nodes.
Computer network follows distributed processing, When tasks are distributed across multiple machines
in a computer network, In short instead of a single computer handling the entire task, each computer
handles a portion of it.
For example,
Computer networking refers to the communication of connected computing devices (such as laptops,
desktops, servers, smartphones, and tablets) and an ever-expanding array of Internet of Things (IoT)
devices (such as cameras, doorbells, refrigerators, audio/visual systems, and various sensors).
Categories
Based on their complexity, computer networks are divide in four categories:
1.PAN
A personal area network (PAN) is a computer network that is built around a single person. Furthermore,
the most common components are a computer, a cell phone, or a personal digital assistant. PAN can
then be used to connect these personal devices to a digital network and the internet by making contact
between them.
2.LAN
A Local Area Network (LAN) is a collection of computers and peripheral devices that are linked together
in a small area, such as a classroom, laboratory, home, or office building. It's a well-known network for
sharing resources like files, printers, games, and other software. The most basic type of LAN network
connects computers and a printer in someone's home or office.
3.MAN
A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is a computer network that connects cities, college campuses, or
small areas. Second, this network is significantly larger than a LAN, which is typically limited to a single
building or location. Following that, depending on the configuration, this type of network can cover
distances ranging from a few miles to tens of miles.
4.WAN
The WAN is another important computer network that spans a large geographical area (Wide Area
Network). A WAN network system, on the other hand, may be a LAN link that connects to other LANs via
telephone lines and radio waves. It is typically limited to a single company or organization.
Application of the network
The following are some examples of network applications in various fields.
