TERM 2
DEFINITION 2 For those of you who do not know or are unsure, a feral child is a human child is neglected, or isolated from human contact & interaction at birth or very young age. Stories have been told since the beginning of time regarding feral children, for example, the Roman myth Romulus and Remus, the twin brothers raised by a she-wolf and legend says founded Rome. Or more familiar, Mowgli from Jungle Book, raised by wolves and friend with a black panther, and a bear. TERM 3
DEFINITION 3 We all know a child that often behaves like an animal for attention or role play, but what if this is an indication of too much isolation? Or too much time around animals during their language development? TERM 4
DEFINITION 4 I have spent many hours studying different cases of feral children and have known a relative that displayed such behaviors due to neglect. TERM 5
DEFINITION 5 Feral children struggle with reintroduction to normal human society due to the lack of language development and abnormal nonverbal behaviors.
I will begin by talking about the lack of communication skills in feral children. Next, I will talk about the Critical Period hypothesis and how this affects a childs ability to learn communications skills. TERM 7
DEFINITION 7 I would like to address the way feral children communicate after they are recovered from their isolated situations. TERM 8
DEFINITION 8 Nonverbal communication in feral children is abnormal and often cannot be translated. TERM 9
DEFINITION 9 If they are confined to isolation without human interaction they have abnormal motor skills and lack the basic understanding of human gestures. TERM 10
DEFINITION 10 An example of this would be Genie, from California, who was chained to a potty chair and confined in isolation in her room for ten years. When she was rescued from her inhumane conditions they discovered she made no noise but would spit and claw at herself, walking in a strange bunny-like manner because her legs had been chained. Her father was reportedly abusive and did not allow her to speak and she had no social interaction.
His research suggests that a specific window exists for learning language, either spoken or tactile(businessinsider.com)(tactile: communication through touch). If a child doesnt learn communication skills during this time frame, it is highly unlikely that they will ever. TERM 17
DEFINITION 17 In the case of Shamedo, according to businessinsider.com, was found in a forest with wolves around 3 or 4 years old. Within five months he learned to stand upright but never learned to verbally communicate, but was able to use sign language to communicate. He was past the critical period when he was found and had a smaller likelihood of learning communication due to that fact. TERM 18
DEFINITION 18 Normally, a child has some form of formal education and has enough social interaction to build a decent communication foundation. TERM 19
DEFINITION 19 Through the process of enculturation children learn how to speak the language of their society through others example and formal education. TERM 20
DEFINITION 20 When a child is isolated at a young age they will adopt the behavior of whatever is around them, be it human or not. If they have no example, they form abnormal behaviors due to their condition and can never be fully reintegrated into society.
In conclusion, I hope that you were able to gain some insight on the effect of isolation on a childs development and the importance of communication in early years. TERM 22
DEFINITION 22 I began by explaining verbal and nonverbal communication in feral children and provided stories. Relevantly, I informed you of the critical period hypothesis and early communication skill development. TERM 23
DEFINITION 23 Feral children struggle with reintroduction to normal human society due to the lack of language development and abnormal nonverbal behaviors. TERM 24
DEFINITION 24 Next time you see a child displaying abnormal or animal behaviors, just think, that could be an indication of neglect and a lack of communication skills.
