Patti Harrison moves out of George’s mansion to live with Eric Clapton, who confesses his relationship with her. January 5th. Melody Maker charts the two Beatles compilations (1962-66 and 1967-70) both in the top 10, and the Red Rose Speedway at #36. Melody Maker: The Beatles back together again? It could happen. Paul: We have broken up as a band, but I’d like to see us work together on a loose basis and I think we will,” Mid January: Ringos You’re sixteen is #1 in US and gets gold record “Jet” Let Me roll it is released in February 18th^ in US Paul was inspired to compose this song for his new Labrador puppy of the same name while they were playing in a Scottish field one summer day. This song was recorded for Band on the Run after Wings’ return from Nigeria. A great horn riff and electric guitar playing chop chords (muted) on the off beats help drive this song on the intro. Electric guitar fills at end of each play. The title line is shouted, then Paul sings the verse over repeating bass note and rock band. Listen to the great harmonies throughout this song. The bridge starts on “our Mater,” where Paul sings sustained melody as electric guitar answers, and ends with Paul and horns. Electric guitars and pounding rock and roll acoustic piano are featured in a short interlude. Synthesizer plays the melody over the verse, and Paul’s vocal enters during the second part of the phrase. Paul’s screaming rock and roll vocals between the horn riffs at the end. A sax through an effects processor states the verse melody to the end the song. End of February 1974 Ringo’s “Oh My My”/ Step Lightly is released. From Ringo’s 1973 Ringo album, was co-written by vocalist and composer Vini Poncia, and went to #5 on the US charts in 1974. Tom Scott (sax), Billy Preston (piano and organ), Klaus V. (bass), Ringo (drums and vocals) and Martha Reeves (background vocals). Tempo counts in with (1,2,3,4) then one silent beat and the acoustic piano holds a chord through the rest of the measure. Gospel style rock song Organ pads and sax ad-libs enter with the bass and drums, and Ringo sings the verse a silly narrative over a loose blues form.
Listen for the bass note slides, along with vocals. “Oh My My’ Ringo Starr – gospel style rock song. Interlude features freely sing back-up vocals, sax solo, acoustic piano, band and horns. Background vocals by Martha are prominent. Chorus repeats. John and Yoko’s temporary separation begins with John and May Pang flying to Los Angeles, where Mal Evans meet them. End of February a London High court agrres to carry on running the Beatles partnership through a receiver. Paul: “As soon as things are sored out, we can get together and do something.” March 1974: Paul and Wings Rehears for their planned trio March 1st: john petitions the US district court for a restraining order against the US Immigration service’s ruling on his deportation case. March 9th: Paul, Linda, and family head to LA for additional rehearsal and Paul visits with John while on coast. March 12: John and Harry Nilsson are thrown out of Las Troubadour Club after they drunkenly heckle the Smothers Bros. John: “I got drunk and shouted, it was a mistake, but hell, I’m human.” The public and press take notice of John, Ringo, Harry and Keith Moon’s wild evening. John and Harry send flowers and an apology note to the Smothers Bros and return to the club the next day to apologize to it’s manager. John and May Pang move into a beach house in Santa Monica. March 20th: John starts producing Harry Nilsson’s Pusscats LP at Burbank Studio and Paul and Linda drop by. Paul and john jam on “Midnight Special” their first musical reunion in four years and john invites Paul to a Sunday music session. Paul visits John at his beach house, and an impromptu jam/recording takes place. Last photo of John and Paul together is snapped at the Beach House. April 8th: Band on the Run/ nineteen hundred and 85 is released in the US only. “Band on the Run” was inspired from remarks George made during the final meetings the Beatles had. A #1 hit in the US and #2 in the UK, this is one of Paul’s very best post-Beatles works. Electric guitars play pickup notes as the intro starts, setting the tempo as bass, drums and a synth riff enters this medium slow groove. Paul sings the verse with the synth answering and vocal harmonies enter and move in parallel fashion to Paul’s lead. Synths join in, playing sustained melodies. A five bar orchestral interlude featuring strings and horns enters. Instrumental
Ringo asks John to write a song for an upcoming album, so John composes “Goodnight Vienna” Paul, Linda, and Wings fly to Nashville for a seven-week stay. They record at Sound Shop Studios producing several songs between 6pm and midnight. The New Wings ling-up of Paul, Linda, Denny Liane and Jimmy (guitars) prepare for Australian tour. They receive help from Nashville session musicians such as Chet Atkins, Floyd Cramer and Vassar Clements, and the addition of a three-piece horn section. Paul wrote “juniors farm” before the trip inspired by Bob Dylan’s 65 song Maggies farm. “Juniors Farm” :cymbals, electric guitar, jimmy’s guitar solo. 2 nd^ week of July 1974 John and May Pang relocate to a small apartment and receive Paul and Linda as their first visitors. The US immigration and Naturalization Department deny john’s appeal against deportation. John has 60 more days in which to leave the US, so he files an additional appeal. John continues working on the Walls and Bridges LP. John promises Elton John that if “Whatever Gets you Thru the night” reaches the #1, John will appear with Elton at NY’s Madison Square Garden. Ringo records material for his Goodnight Vienna LP in LA at Sunset Sound Studios with producer Richard Perry. Much of this album was conceived while Ringo was hanging out and living with John and Harry Nilsson in LA. Not as well received as the Ringo album, but did spawn top ten singles, “only you” and “the no no song” John made a complete demo of “only you.” A 1955 platters hit, for Ringo complete with his own lead vocal. Ring substituted his own lead vocal over those same tracks. Ringo: my vocal is good because it was too high for me so I went into this strange falsetto. Wow it works. Ringo (drums and lead vocals_, John (acoustic guitar), Steve Cropper (electric guitar), Billy P (electric Piano) and Harry N(back up vocals) Only you reach #6 in US. John’s very distinctive acoustic guitar rhythm is the feature o the intro. Ringo’s voice is high and Steve Cropper’s electric guitar riffs and fills complete the texture along with band andvocal pads.Verse two features more lectric piano and continuous vocal textures. Verse return with Ringo speaking the lyrics instead of singin them in a narrative style made famous by Elvis during the 1950s. Ringo return to singing at the second part of the verse with the break and electric piano as before. On his way back from LA, John stops at Caribou Ranch in Colorado to do back up work on Elton John’s version of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” 2 nd^ week of August: John and Paul co-sign publishing agreements with ATV music, substantially increasing their incomes.
3 rd^ week: john and May Pang fly to LA to assist ringo with the Goodnight Vienna Sessions. Last day of August: john tells a US federal court of his unjust persecution and denial of citizenship. Based on government fears of his political stances and on the trumped up drug charges from years back. John’s Walls and Bridges LP is released. Sept-Octo: George works on Dark Horse LP. George has laryngitis during these sessions (his own voice blown out from fatigue). Patti has left George for Eric Clapton, and rumors are George had an affair with Ringo’s wife. George soon finds Olivia Trinidad Arias, a secretary at Dark Horse Records, whom he will later marry. One critic says Dark Horse sounds hastily assembled and unfinished, as George quickly leaves the studio after its completion to tour Canada. The album will not be released until that tour 2/3s complete, which doesn’t help sales or keep the LP on the charts. The title song from the album features robben ford (electri guitar), billy p, and horn players tom scott sax. “Dark Horse” becomes a top 20 single later in the year. Bass drum and jangly acoustic guitars set the tempo and feel on the intro. After a break at the end of the phrase, the title line is sung as a chorus, then another verse with a break. A verse with flute solo ad-lib fills over sustained vocal pads, a break and into the chorus. The intro music returns, verse and flute solo fills reoccur and the chorus returns as before. The intro music returns slightly altered as an interlude, the chorus returns as before, and the song ends on a break. By October 9th, John and friends celebrate 39th^ bday at NY club. John resumes work on Rock n Roll album tapes from 1973, working o nsongs such as “ain’t that a shame.” And “Stand by me.” 27 th^ October: John’s Walls and Bridges album receives a gold record. This album features # dream. Ethereal sounding akin to “Lucky in the sky with Diamonds” or “Strawberry Fields Forever” Went to #9 on the charts ironically. It’s a thick production and a beautiful song, with May Pands sensual whisperings of Johns name in the background. “Walls and Bridges,” working title , but john reported that many of the images came to him in a dream, hence the new title. The lush intro features band, string pads and side electric guitar. Rever-laden voice, maracas and tambourine, Beatle-esque strings support the verse. Music shifts on the word “hear” The cryptic dream lyrics enter here as a chorus.An interlude has the music, featuring acoustic guitars and strings, slowing to a grand pause, then a drum riff kicks off the opening tempo and verse music. Cello prominent in mix. #9 dream. 3 rd^ week of October: Paul and Linda hold a press conference in NYC to announce Wing’s next venture a 1975/76 world tour. George holds a press conference in Beverly Hills, CA announcing his upcoiming North America tour. 28 th^ October Allen Klen loses his case against George Ringo, Yoko and several Beatles-related companies for funds owed. Oct 20: The famous picture of John in front of the Statue of liberty flashing a peace sign is taken.
