Exploring Physical and Chemical Changes in Everyday Life, Assignments of Chemistry

The concept of physical and chemical changes in matter, using examples from everyday life such as an orange fruit and a cake. It guides the reader through identifying and documenting various physical and chemical changes that occur in the home and community, providing explanations for the observed changes. The document also discusses the law of conservation of mass and how it applies to these changes. This comprehensive resource can be valuable for students studying chemistry, physics, or environmental science, as it helps them understand the fundamental principles of matter and its transformations in a relatable and practical manner.

LABORATORY ACTIVITY: STATE, PROPERTIES, AND CHANGES OF MATTER
1. Draw example of physical and chemical changes that occurred in an orange fruit and in a cake.
(a) Orange fruit Physical change
(c) Cake Physical change
2. Identify physical and chemical changes that occurred in your home or community. Give at two
examples of physical changes and two examples of chemical changes. Document (take a photo) these
changes and provide explanations for your examples.
Physical Changes
cutting of tomato
> cutting of tomato is a
physical change as
only the shape and
size of the tomato is
changed but there is
no chemical change in
the tomato.
Grating Cheese
>Grating cheese is a
physical change
because the cheese is
not changing its
identity; just its state-
from solid cheese to
small shavings.
rotten mango
>this is a chemical
change because there is
something new made:
mold,and the chemical
make up of the mango is
different so the change
isn't reversible making it a
chemical change.The fruit
has also probably begun to
change color,smell bad and
change texture.
(b) Orange Fruit Chemical change
(d) Cake Chemical change

3. Determine the mass of the new object and show that this observation is in agreement with the law of conservation of mass. What type of changes occurred, and what state of the object is in before and after the change.

rusting of iron

rusting iron changes the color of iron to brown or red, so it's chemical change. When the iron is exposed to air and moisture, rust formation takes place. Rust is nothing but Iron Oxide; a new substance formed out of the reaction. The colour of the surface of the iron also changes. Hence, rusting of iron is a chemical change.
