holism and also used more generally to refer to the 'whole
nature of something' as being the 'gestalt' of something.

Gestalt Therapy

DEFINITION 9 bringing dreamsback to life and acting as each part,each part of the dream represents different contradictory parts within the client TERM 10

Empty Chair

DEFINITION 10 -client sits in one chair and pretends to be first top-dog (righteous, moralistic, bossy, demanding, manipulative) then underdog (oughts, manipulates with threat of catastrophe(disaster) )- role played both parts by the clients-goal is to promote a higherlevelofintegrationbetweenthepolarities and conflicts that exist in everyone.-aim is not to rid oneself ofcertain traits but tolearn to accept and live with the polarities.

-(background)-those aspects of the clients situation that are often out of their awareness (tone of voice, physical gesture, demeanor, nonverbal content) TERM 17

Paradoxical theory of change

-striving to be in current position rather than trying to be something you will become;authentic change occurs more from being who we are than from trying to be who we are not TERM 22

Phenomenological inquiry

DEFINITION 22 -paying attention to what is occurring "NOW" to help make contact at present moment-(asking what and how rather than why, to emphasize now)-power is the present TERM 23

Projection

DEFINITION 23 -attributes of our personality inconsistent with our self image are disowned and put onto others (those that do this think they are victim of circumstance,blaming others for our problems, TERM 24

Retroflection

DEFINITION 24 -turn back onto themselves what they would like to do to others ( depressed, psychosomatic) TERM 25

Unfinished business

DEFINITION 25 -when figures emerge from our background that are unresolved we get this (resentment, hatred, pain, anxiety, grief guilt etc)
